Newborn Session Prep Guide

Writer: Victoria WhiteVictoria White

Congratulations on the arrival of your precious newborn! These early days and weeks are truly magical. I'm honored to capture this special time for your family. To ensure our newborn session is a relaxing and enjoyable experience, I've put together some helpful tips to make the most of our time together. Let's make this a memorable and stress-free experience for everyone!

When to book your newborn session:

  • I suggest booking at least one month before your due date. But don't worry; if baby decides to arrive sooner or later than their expected due date, just let me know, and we can adjust the date if necessary, so that you are in the studio between 4 and 15 days after delivery.

  • Newborn sessions generally take place on weekday mornings between 10am and 12pm. This is when babies are most content and sleepy.

On the day of your newborn session:

  • Before our session, try keeping your baby awake and engaged for about an hour. This can include: - A warm bath - Chatting and interacting with your baby while they're in just their diaper By stimulating your baby beforehand, you'll help them become extra sleepy for our session. This deeper sleep makes posing and transitioning between sets much easier

  • A well-fed baby is a sleepy baby! To ensure your little one is content and relaxed during our session: - Plan to feed your baby right before our session. You're welcome to arrive a bit early to feed your baby at the studio, especially if you've had a longer drive. - Cluster feedings in the 12 hours leading up to our session. This will help your baby sleep more soundly and for longer stretches, making our session a breeze

  • To ensure a smooth and enjoyable session for everyone: - I recommend arranging for older siblings to leave after their photos are taken. We'll capture family and sibling shots first. - Sessions typically last 1.5-3 hours, which can be a long wait for siblings, especially in a quiet studio environment. - Consider having Dad drive separately or asking Grandma to meet us at the studio to take the siblings home. This way, everyone stays happy and relaxed

  • If you're comfortable with your baby using a pacifier, please bring one along, even if they don't seem to take to it yet. Sucking is a natural soothing mechanism that can help calm your baby during our session. I can even hold the pacifier for a bit to help your little one settle in and relax.

To keep your baby snug and sleepy, the studio will be warmly heated – regardless of the time of year! Babies love the warmth, and it helps them settle in beautifully. Feel free to bring: - Drinks to stay hydrated - A change of clothes if you think you might get too warm Your comfort is important to me, and I want you to relax and enjoy our time together

  • Don't worry about bringing outfits for your newborn's photos. I've got everything covered: - Wraps - Headbands - Hats - Clothes - Props Unless you have a special family heirloom or item that holds sentimental value, feel free to leave the outfit planning to me! If you do have something special, just let me know in advance so I can incorporate it into our session.

Don't worry if your little one needs a break – we'll take one! If baby gets fussy, we'll pause and tend to their needs. Whether it's time for a feeding, a diaper change, or just a cuddle, we'll make sure baby is happy and comfortable. In fact, most babies need to eat at least once during our session. And let's be honest – looking that cute is hard work! We'll take things at baby's pace, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone."

What to wear:

  • When choosing outfits for our family and sibling shots, opt for simple, soft, and neutral colors like: - Grey - Cream - Beige - Taupe These calming colors will help keep the focus on your precious baby and highlight the love and connection within your family. Avoid bold patterns, bright colors, and busy textures to ensure a timeless and heartwarming look

  • When choosing your outfits, kindly avoid neon colors. These vibrant hues can: - Cast unflattering colors onto your skin - Change the natural tone and tint of your skin Instead, opt for soft, muted colors that will complement your natural beauty and ensure beautiful, timeless photos

  • For sibling photos, choose classic, timeless outfits that won't distract from the special moment. Avoid: - Logos - Shirts with writing or graphics These can draw the eye away from the sweet interaction between siblings. Instead, opt for simple, understated clothing that lets the love and connection between them shine through

  • Feel free to reach out to me anytime if you have questions or need guidance on wardrobe choices or anything else. I'm always here to help! Just send me an email, and I'll be happy to assist you in making our session together truly unforgettable

  • This time with your new baby is precious and fleeting. I want you to savor every moment of our session together! Sit back, relax, and have fun watching your little one's first photo session unfold. It's going to be an amazing experience, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it! Can't wait to capture these special moments for you!"
